My Students
Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun." As an art teacher, I am in the business of helping young artists develop both creativity and intelligence!
My student artists, many first and second-generation Americans are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's art program for many years.
Our tremendous school community dreamed of bringing our students an art program, and have been thrilled to watch our students' creativity blossom. Now entering its 8th year, our art program has moved into a new classroom, transitioned to a choice-based-studio, and continues to see fantastic results. From September to June the walls of our school are covered with beautiful pieces that make students proud. Each year culminates with a school-wide art gallery and sees students represented in district-wide art shows!
My Project
Imagine an excited and driven young artist. The artist has a plan for an art project and has found inspiration or resource images online that will help him reach his goal. This artist needs a way to print out the images so they can be utilized for sketching or collage. That same artist, along with over 600 others, will need a place to self-reflect and critique the final piece once it has been completed. A younger student may have created a sculpture with blocks or Play-Doh. Printer ink will help this artist capture their creation as a printed photo. I have the privilege of teaching over 600 tremendously driven, creative students. Each day I strive to bring them new opportunities to practice, expand their critical thinking skills through visual art, and exposure to new artists and cultures. Throughout the year this requires creativity exercises, typed artist statements, colored visuals and a variety of other printed materials. Without the stockpile of materials donated to traditional classrooms at the start of the year, our art room is left without the materials to allow artists to access various printed learning tools.
Albert Einstein knew the arts are an essential part of a well-rounded education.
By funding this project you are providing my students access to the materials and tools they need to enhance their creativity and build essential critical thinking skills. You are helping ensure these 600+ artists receive the high quality, visual arts education they deserve no matter their background, income, or zip code.
