PHS students are 80% African American, 14% Caucasian, and 78% are labeled "economically disadvantaged." That doesn't describe the rich gifts inside them. Because our school has less than 500 students in it, the number of electives is small. One art class, one ceramics class, one music technology class, a film class.
What our kids need is the chance to truly express their gifts outside of electives they are packed in to because kids need the credits.
Every day, the Library is packed at lunchtime. Our kids would love the chance to leverage the Library's art collection and art supplies to learn about great art and create some of their own.
My Project
Lunch time is often the only time students can relax in a safe place and be themselves in an unstructured, but loving and nurturing atmosphere. They often express the desire to do rich, real art projects at school. This project would allow them to access the wonderful art books in the Library, learn from them, turn on beautiful music, and work, day after day, on a gorgeous painting, expressing their own thoughts and feelings on a canvas. Help us "remake learning" in the Library, leveraging our art collection, and turn books and dreams into truth and beauty.
Paint is never used in our art class.
Brushes, canvas, real paint, a palette, even a table-top easel to hold their canvas to the light-- these things will help students think of themselves and their work as important. We know when someone helps you believe you deserve it, that you come to believe it. Real painting materials, to use along side real art books, are a great start to that belief: I am an artist. What I create is meaningful.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
