My Students

MAST is an alternative day treatment program for youth with emotional or behavioral disorders. Our program has a 4:1 youth to adult ratio. The students spend part of their day in school instruction under the guidance of a special education teacher. The remainder of their day is spent in therapeutic activities and counseling under the direction of social workers and licensed counselors. Many of our students are involved in the juvenile justice system as an offender, victim or both. The families of my students are often in crisis. MAST truly provides a whole child approach by working together with families and students to help them meet their therapeutic goals.

My Project

These materials will be used by the students during art sessions in school. The use of artistic methods to treat psychological disorders and enhance mental health is known as art therapy; a technique rooted in the idea that creative expression can foster healing.

The pandemic has exposed that many young people lack the coping skills necessary to adapt to an unpredictable, changing world.

These materials will provide our students with the opportunity to use the visual arts as a coping skill.

Under the guidance of a Therapeutic Educator, the students will have the opportunity to learn proper technique in handling materials. They can then use these techniques to create art as a coping skill.
