Paint! Sew! Sculpt!

Help me give my students more opportunities to paint, have enough brushes experiment with brushstrokes, learn the magic of creating an embroidered artwork, and have the proper wire to make an armature for 3D figure.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 240 middle schoolers have little to nothing of formal visual arts education. The class meets daily for 47 minutes, but I would like additional art resources to maximize their creative experience.

The classroom is the child's studio.

I am building a 3 year program. In the first year, skills-based art class. The students create art that incorporate the elements of art: line, space, color, value, shape, form and texture. They also learn about art movements and artists from various cultures.

The students in Art 2 create art that shows a broadening of the techniques learned in Art 1. Some projects are more open ended and the students have to research and plan, then create.

The advanced class is based on the premise that places children at the center of art making choices. What do artists do?The child is the artist. The classroom is the child’s studio. The students plan, create, evaluate, revise, take risks using drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, fiber and sculpture materials.

My Project

My district budget for the year is about $4 per student. Like many of my fellow teachers I use my own money to supply my classroom. Since I have 240 students, we go though a lot of art material. In one paint day we use 3 pints of every color. The students often use a variety of brushes. That means 90-120 brushes are used ever period. Paint and brushes are always needed in my active art classroom. The Kwik Stix is solid tempera paint that dispense like a glue stick.

Having the proper art tools and materials MAKES a difference in the creative experience.

Middle school students are experiencing huge changes in their development. Sewing also improves eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills. It also improves concentration. Having a classroom set of embroidery hoops and embroidery floss (thread) will allow all students access to this type of art.

The armature wire is used to make a solid, but flexible framework for a sculpture. We have used pipe cleaners in the past, but it is not very sturdy. The armature figure can be left as is, or the students can add clay or papier mâché to make a fuller figure.
