Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in an all-day kindergarten in an inner city school in a large city in Rhode Island. Approximately 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Poverty is an issue for many of these children. There is a large population of second language learners in our school. Due to lack of exposure to learning type experiences, many of our kindergarten students enter school well below the readiness level.

Kindergarten used to be the place to go to learn to socialize and develop concepts through play activities as a means to get ready for reading in first grade. Those days are gone! Children who don't leave kindergarten reading, writing and doing math computations fluently are set up for failure. So much pressure is put on 5 year olds in school. As an early childhood educator, I fully understand that these goals can only be met if approached in a developmental manner. Money is no longer made available in budgets for "extras" such as paint, yet paint is essential to an effective kindergarten program. Stroking a paint brush across a paper aids in the development of eye/hand coordination, fine motor skills and spatial relationships. Science concepts are easily developed with paints. Math and literacy skills are easily integrated with painting activities. A child's creativity can flow freely through painting activities. Most of all, it is a developmentally appropriate activity for a 5 year old who will learn because he/she is having fun.

My students need paint and an assortment of paper. These materials will ensure that my 5 year old children will have have the opportunity to enrich their learning activities as they develop many of the developmental skills that are necessary for them to achieve success in school.

Your donation will make it possible my children to learn in a fun way. It will provide hours of fun for many children and a multitude of learning experiences throughout the year.
