Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students who select Art as an elective in my school are not, surprisingly, the usual so-called "talented" artists. They come to the school to embrace diversity, equity, advocacy, and positive change locally, nationally, and globally.

Our globally-focused school has a diversity mission, so our students are diverse in myriad ways: culturally, academically, socio-economically, in dealing with trauma, and in defining their relationship to the arts.

They often come up with creative and unusual ways to channel their energy into efforts that lift up our community, such as advocacy for others through performances and artwork. They are both fiercely individual and conscientiously collaborative, and their sense of moral integrity is thorough and circumspect. They are especially attuned to issues of mental health in our community and seek new ways to address them.

My Project

Many of my 6-12 art students have been traumatized to varying degrees by the pandemic. I'm finding that their interest in expressive painting has grown considerably over the past two years, and in my choice-based classroom, the consumables I have related to painting have dwindled significantly.

For students who have had little control over their environment in recent years, controlling paint media has become a way to cope with their stress and develop their creativity.

I'm finding that students now want to test out materials and compare their effects and qualities before choosing what to use and how to use it for their art. Their practical, evaluative thinking skills have grown in many unexpected ways through patiently gathering evidence to inform their artistic decisions. Naturally, I'll be teaching color theory and basic techniques with watercolors, tempera, and acrylic, using various brushes and surfaces, and encouraging experimentation and practice, in manageable surface sizes to avoid waste. The large pump bottles of paint allow me to fill plastic paint pot strips to make a kit for students who sometimes need to work from home.

At my school, we're very eco-minded, and students learn how to take care of brushes, paint pots, palettes, and paints to help them last. We also learn how to upcycle discarded art experiments into new art. Still, there comes a time when paint runs out, brushes fall apart, and students ask for surfaces that are made to take their choice of paint. Our consumables are nearly all consumed; this project will replenish them for a while, at least!
