My urban students are culturally and economically diverse, reflecting the population of our city and our school's mission for intercultural understanding. They study a world language and two strands of social studies, as well as science, math and language arts, which leaves them little time in their regular schedule for integrated, interdisciplinary arts-infused education. Through each of my projects, I strive to help students experience literacy in authentic contexts that allow them to see how learning in all disciplines, including the arts, is relevant to comprehending the world and participating as a vital member of the global community.
