This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students who will participate in the project are in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. They come from a school in which 99% of the population receives a free or reduced-price lunch and often do not have opportunities lots of other kids are able to experience daily. We, as their educators, strive each day to make experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.
My students are talented and enthusiastic about art.
They love learning about artists and making their own unique art pieces. Many of them do not have the opportunity to make or experience art outside of the classroom. I believe that is one of the reasons they are so passionate about the art they create while they are in my classroom. "I can't wait to take this home!" are words I love to hear each day as my students create something they didn't think they could.
My Project
Due to Covid 19 my students will not be allowed to share any supplies this year. That means every student will need their own art supply kit. As of now I only have about 25 watercolor pallets and I have 300 students. It is not in the school budget to purchase these.
These paints will allow my students to have some normalcy when in the art room.
I never want them that there are not enough supplies to go around. Having supplies to use will help them adjust to our schools "New Normal" and allow them to be creative and get away from the craziness surrounding them. Many of my students have special needs that range from emotional to physical needs. Art is also a way to provide them with extra ways to be successful and be creative.
