My Project
I'm working to build our classroom collection with meaningful plays that not only engage students with compelling stories but also expose them to diverse perspectives, histories, and voices often underrepresented in standard curricula. These texts introduce students to influential playwrights like Ntozake Shange, Lorraine Hansberry, and Suzan Lori Parks while fostering empathy and understanding through authentic stories that explore identity, community, and social change. By providing these works, we give students both mirrors to see themselves represented and windows into experiences different from their own, connecting literature to historical contexts and encouraging critical thinking about society and culture.
Alongside building our library, I'd like to provide students with materials to create personalized bookmarks as they engage with these works.
This creative component encourages students to express their unique connections to the texts through art, creating meaningful keepsakes that celebrate their reading accomplishments. The bookmark-making process develops artistic expression while promoting reading as an engaging, personalized activity. As students share their bookmark designs and reading experiences with one another, we'll build a stronger classroom community centered around literature.
