My students are the future leaders of the world. They are mostly from the inner-city of Milwaukee although many of them are also immigrants or have parents who immigrated to the states. The student body is extremely diverse with about fifty percent of the population identifying as Latino, thirty percent of the population identifying as White, ten percent and the remaining percentage identifying as Asian or American Indian.
My students are a resilient group, with approximately eighty percent of them qualifying for free or reduced price lunches yet, they beat the odds everyday as they fight against the achievement gap.
Thirty-five high school students are raising funds to take an exploratory excursion to Costa Rica and Nicaragua the in the summer of 2018! These students are driven, determined and focused on excelling academically at the collegiate level. They are also resilient with many of them getting jobs and fundraising daily to make this trip a reality.
On this trip, the students will have the opportunity to practice sustainable tourism while exploring the cultural and natural wonders of Central America.
The supplies from this project will be divided up into backpacks for students as a surprise for the last meeting prior to departure. These travel essentials such as shampoo and sun screen will be one less burden for students and families to worry about.
While exploring Nicaragua and Costa Rica, our primary focus will be on exploring the biodiversity of the countries to enhance students' learning of and passion for science! Some of the highlights of our itinerary while on the islands, include snorkeling, kayaking, volcano hikes and whitewater rafting.
Students will journal daily about their experiences and will reflect on their personal growth. Additionally, students will collect data on their self-chosen research questions. Every student will develop a project to answer a question that they are curious and passionate about and they have to go to Costa Rica and/or Nicaragua to answer!
