Help me give my students Ozobots to help them make connections between literacy skills and real world problems.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come into class each day ready to learn at a new level. These 11th and 12th grade students have been learning how to move from "consumption to creation," taking what they have learned and making something tangible from it. We do not operate in a traditional ELA classroom, instead my students attempt to take what they are learning and pair it with tech and creative learning.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds with about 70% of them receiving free and reduced lunch, but this hasn't stopped them from seeking knowledge at every turn.
Because of this it is very important that I expose them to a multitude of ways to think outside of the box. To take everyday items or everyday technology and use it to illustrate what they have learned and use it for critical thinking and problem solving.
The use of technology is almost a weekly activity in my classroom, and other classrooms around the school. Over the course of the last year we have attempted to increase the use of Educational Technology across all curriculums at the secondary level. Technology such as Ozobots allow my students to learn to code and apply it to literacy skills. In order to better prepare my students to be college and career ready, I find that it is important that they understand that there is a relationship between their general classes, such as English and history, and technology such as coding.
Through coding with Ozobots students will learn not only regular literacy skills but they will also learn how to be digitally literate through coding, thus helping them with analysis and critical thinking.
Ozobots will help them create a visual representation of the specific literacy skill they are exploring. Because the Ozobots can be used across all subject areas, students will have an opportunity to experience coding and creativity in different disciplines.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement. Ozobots will give my students endless possibilities for cultivating essential 21st Century skills.
