Oxygen Detectives

My students need a dissolved oxygen meter and calibration solution for use as part of an ongoing ten year study of a freshwater lake in our neighborhood.

My Students

One of the most exciting opportunities science students have is to participate in field studies. Our school has been gathering information and testing the waters of a neighborhood lake for ten years. Our equipment has become outdated and needs to be replaced.

My students are advanced science students who like challenges!

They enjoy learning about the world around them and using their knowledge to give back to the community. Our school is a public school in the suburbs of a mid-sized city. We have a freshwater lake in a neighborhood adjacent to the school that students live around, and provide us with a field study.

My Project

Each year a group of advanced biology students participates in a field study of a neighborhood freshwater lake. This lake is located within a mile of our school, and many of our students live around it. The students are able to apply their knowledge to a real situation. We test many factors of the water quality, and catalog microorganisms. The students prepare a yearly report which is sent to the homeowners association that manages the lake. First funded by the homeowners association we began the study ten years ago. As we have expanded testing, Chevron classroom grants have generously added to our equipment with the purchase of a net for catching microorganisms. This grant is for the purchase of a dissolved oxygen meter and the solution to calibrate it. With this meter, the students can more accurately measure the oxygen content of the water, rather than use more cumbersome chemical method.

Donations to this project will allow the students to continue to take accurate data for many years to come.

We can also use this particular probe to study other examples of dissolved oxygen within our classroom. It can be used for a comparison study of a regular fish tank and a river tank. We can also study the effect of temperature on amounts of dissolved oxygen in water. The applications are numerous!
