My Project

My students are amazing emergent bilingual students growing up in southeast Austin, TX. Our classroom community went through a pretty unique 2nd grade year last year during COVID-19 and "looped" up to 3rd grade together this year as well, with the same students and the same teacher. I am lucky to share that we will be "looping" again to 4th grade together, making this a three-year learning journey for us. The children LOVE to read, especially in a community with others, laughing about characters and diving into series together. 3rd and 4th grade are the best years for kids to start to get into their favorite book series.

Every year we engage in book clubs and it can be VERY challenging to find sets of books written by writers of the global majority (BIPOC) about their own life experiences.

Often I have to drive around the city to different public libraries to check out books to make book sets. Even then, often we are reading books written by authors that don't look like my students. It's critical that students are reading high-quality books and are seeing themselves reflected in the stories they read. Because we have already spent two years together as a classroom community, I can easily predict what books kids would love to share together in book clubs. I will turn these book sets into a grade-level library for our fourth-grade team so that they will be available to all fourth graders at my campus.
