Owning Learning--An Environment for All Students

My Students

My students are excited to enter my classroom because I've worked hard to create a space that caters to different learners with standing desks, bean bag chairs, and dorm chairs. I want to see them become more conscious of their learning needs by giving them opportunities to try new things.

My seventh graders are active and curious students who enjoy the project-based, cross-curricular activities my teaching team creates.

They moan and groan when a new novel or research project is introduced but dive in with enthusiasm when they discover something new. This year, we implemented a school-wide reading initiative called R.E.D. (Read Every Day) that devotes 20 uninterrupted minutes of reading to every school day. I brought in bean bag and dorm chairs to encourage this love of reading. As the year progressed, I allowed students to use them during class, as well. For students who have difficulty sitting still for an hour-long class, I found some unused computer desks that could be raised to standing height. All of these components have helped to create a learning environment that encourages students to take ownership of their learning.

My Project

After a learning environment survey, many students indicated that a place to sit and work on the floor would make our classroom a more welcoming and enjoyable place to learn. Over the past several years, I have changed the format of my class to include more center-based learning which allows me to target students who need additional instruction or enrichment. As a result, students are often placed in small, collaborative groups to complete activities where they are encouraged to learn from each other. Having a space to work on the floor provides an additional setting in which students can collaborate.

I hope to continue developing the unique learning environment that I've worked hard to create by giving students an additional space to learn.

Having an inviting floor space is one area that is lacking in my classroom setting. I want students to be excited about their learning, and I believe that creating an environment where they have choice and ownership is an important key.
