My students are amazing and I learn so much from them. I love how at this age they are finding their voices and learning to share their opinions. Fifth graders are old enough to do independent projects, but not too old that they are afraid to be silly and fun.
Engaging, appropriate novels are so important to spark their interest!
I like to keep them engaged by providing them with unique opportunities and activities that they have not been presented with before. I want them to see that thoughtful planning takes place for them because they are loved and important.
Plain and simple, some of my boys do not like to read. I tell them it's not that they do not like to read, just that they have not found the right book. I think these clever, witty, sarcastic books will be just the thing to hook them!
My students are always looking for truth and justice in their world; just like the characters in Carl Hiassen's books.
Whether reading about endangered owls, protecting the Florida panther, or sniffing out possible sewage leaks, these books will have my kiddos reading like crazy and wanting even more! I look forward to watching them fall in love with books!
