Owl Pellets

Help me give my students an experience that they will remember forever! The students will dissect the owl pellets to discover what owls eat and then piece the bones together to recreate the animal that was eaten.

My Project

Our school family is just that, a family. We are located in a small urban community that was once a bustling city with a large industry of refineries. Today our town is a community that is almost forgotten. Many of the big industries have closed or moved away and the main street is mostly quiet. Our student population is truly diverse, a tiny melting pot of people from various walks of life sharing a little corner of the world.

Many of my students are from low socioeconomic status meaning that school is the place where they are provided with meals, entertainment, and comfort in addition to an education.

The teachers and staff at our school create a community of caring and kindness that helps these students thrive regardless of the challenges facing them.

My class, along with the whole 4th grade, will be starting a unit on Owls this spring. We would like to provide our students with a hands-on unit on Owls and their role in the animal life cycle. Students will be able to watch the dissect the owl pellets and piece the bones together to recreate the skeleton of an animal that was eaten by the owls. The students will also be able to work in centers to read informational text (or listen with headphones) on owls and their digestive system. The students will be able to keep the bones that they discover in their owl pellets.
