This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching drama at HPHS, the second oldest school in the country, for 13 years. I continue to be amazed by my students' determination despite the many obstacles they face. Nearly all of our students come from low-income households and many have faced homelessness or other significant hardships, yet come to school for new opportunities.

When people ask me about my students, one of the first things they will notice in my response is how much I smile when I talk about them.

Nearly all students at HPHS will take Drama during their high school career. While it is my largest challenge, this is also my favorite part of my job. I have the opportunity to watch students go from no interest or exposure to an art form, to enthusiastically participating and pursuing theatre. The most beautiful part about this process is watching these teenagers find their confidence and their voice.

My Project

It has been many years since the school has had a News station, so it is time to start this network!

Our school has a rich history and incredible stories to tell, and my class would like to begin their very own OWL News station.

Having a school news program in partnership with a Journalism and Media class will give my acting students a different opportunity to expand their skills and build their confidence. Your donation will go toward a video camera and equipment needed to create a successful and professional news production. For this new endeavor, a portion of my classroom will be turned into a recording studio with these resources. The flexibility of the materials selected will also allow for students to go "into the field" (around the school and into classrooms) to capture all of the amazing happenings and people at HPHS!

On a larger scale, this is an amazing opportunity to grow school spirit and promote a positive school culture as we return from a challenging time. This is the positivity and energy our school needs to help everyone feel like they are part of a community of support, excitement, and opportunity.
