My Students

"What will you show us today?" is the questions I have the pleasure of answering on a daily basis. My students know I don't expect them learn anything they can't be shown! I want them to touch, smell, hear and taste so I'm sure they understand any Science concept that comes their way.

Just like students all over America, "my" kids need hands on learning in order to understand.

It's too bad children today have to spend much of their time indoors with only video games and TV to entertain them. Consequently, they miss the natural exploration of their environment and don't always have the prior knowledge and life experiences that it will take to master Science concepts happening all around them. How can you understand photosynthesis when you do not observe native plants growing in your neighborhood? How can you find out what animals eat when you are not free to roam a country road and see evidence of a food chain? How can students track weathering and erosion from the couch in their living room? I teach three classes of Fifth graders each day. Each class has its own personality, but the one trait they share is limited hands on Science experience. There is a need in my community to put Science tools and experiences in the hands of our student population.

My Project

Have you ever seen an owl pellet? Ever opened one to check out an owl's favorite food? Can you imagine how much fun a child has when they do this "dinner diving" for the first time? Students will use tweezers and toothpicks to take apart an owl pellet and separate the bones, feathers and fur that are found inside. My little Scientists will organize the bones according to type using bone identification cards. They will sketch the bones and record their findings on a graph. They will use the bones to reconstruct a skeleton, drawing in any missing bones. Groups will then construct food chains based on evidence they found in the pellet. The chain will start with the sun and end with the owl. We will work together to use data and our own inferences to create accurate chains.

Do you remember your 5th grade Science teacher?

Did he or she amaze and inspire you? Did he/she make you wonder about the world; make you feel powerful, successful, confident? Did your teacher cultivate a love for Science in your heart, a deep desire to investigate and observe the world around you?? If you can say yes to these questions, you are familiar with the type of teacher I'm striving to be; you are probably the life long learner I am trying to create. Thank you for your desire to help!
