Just like students all over America, "my" kids need hands on learning in order to understand. It's too bad children today have to spend much of their time indoors with only video games and TV to entertain them. Consequently, they miss the natural exploration of their environment and don't always have the prior knowledge and life experiences that it will take to master Science concepts happening all around them. How can you understand photosynthesis when you do not observe native plants growing in your neighborhood? How can you find out what animals eat when you are not free to roam a country road and see evidence of a food chain? How can students track weathering and erosion from the couch in their living room? I teach three classes of Fifth graders each day. Each class has its own personality, but the one trait they share is limited hands on Science experience. There is a need in my community to put Science tools and experiences in the hands of our student population.
