Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love how curious and eager my 5th-grade students are when it comes to exploring the natural world. They ask thoughtful questions, love working with their hands, and truly come alive when learning connects to the world around them. One of the major concepts we study in 5th-grade science is how all living things are connected in an ecosystem through food chains.

To help students really see these connections, we will be dissecting owl pellets.

This hands-on activity gives students a chance to become scientists in their own classroom, discovering what owls eat by examining the bones and fur inside the pellets. As they identify the remains of animals like mice, voles, or birds, students will gain a deeper understanding of predator-prey relationships and the vital role owls play in balancing ecosystems.

This project will help students grasp how energy flows through a food chain and how even small animals and plants play an important role in maintaining the health of the environment. By studying owl pellets, students will build a concrete understanding of how all life is connected, and why each link in the food chain matters.

Your support will make science come alive for my students and help them understand the delicate balance of nature in a meaningful, memorable way. Thank you for helping us grow young scientists!
