Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are charismatic, dedicated scholars. They are multilingual (some speaking three languages!) and learn every day in both English and Spanish in our school's dual language program.
They live in a low socioeconomic area, and our school is a Title I school which means that the majority students (in our case 100%) receive free lunch because of family income.
Most of them are the children of immigrants or immigrated to the United States with their families in search of a better life. They have dreams of becoming scientists, veterinarians, teachers, doctors, inventors, actors, and secret agents.
They work hard every day to become better readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians, and they deserve the best resources and experiences now so that one say they can achieve their dreams.
My Project
Every year, our 5th graders celebrate the end of their elementary school experience with an outdoor education camping trip centered on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) standards. Many of our students don't have opportunities to explore outside their neighborhoods. This trip allows them to experience nature while learning about science, teamwork, and life. For a decade, our students have benefited from the outdoor education program, observing wildlife, testing the quality of a creek, learning to reduce waste, and participating in team-building challenges. It is an experience that students cherish forever. This trip is the experience of a lifetime for so many of our students. They get to be surrounded by nature, many of them for the first time, deepen their understanding and love for science, and participate in fun team-building activities. The camp's learning and team-building activities range from nature walks to rock wall climbing and tests of creek quality. It is an experience our students deserve and are already looking forward to. For many of them, Science is their favorite subject, so to participate in outdoor science camp is thrilling and priceless. They learn so much, develop so much independence in just a few days, and truly have the time of their lives. This trip is an experience my students will never forget.
