This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach fifth grade at a low-performing, Title 1 school in the South Bronx section of New York City (P.S. 43x). The school is a School in Need of Improvement Year 2 (SINI 2).
Most of my students are visual and auditory learners which means I must model lessons for them in all subject areas. My teaching tools and resources are limited. I am dependent on my overhead projector. I use transparencies to model reading habits and strategies, writing process, math computations and problem-solving, word study, and analyze documents to answer document-based questions for the NYS Social Studies exam. My students are more focused and motivated each time I use the projector. They even use the projector to engage in peer tutoring and as a learning center.
So, what's the problem? Well, my projector sits on the floor. I do not have a cart nor do I have extra desks. When I use the projector for each lesson, I usually sit it on a student's desk which is not near an electrical outlet. I find myself lugging around the projector and a desk across my classroom. Also, whenever another teacher's projector breaks down, he/she asks to use mine. The problem is that we have to carry the projector to another classroom. I'm afraid my projector will fall on the floor because it is not securely situated on a cart. By the way, I personally purchased my projector.
If I had an overhead projector cart in the classroom, storage and tranport will not be a hazard or inconvience. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
