I am a fifth grade teacher in a rural North Carolina school with a 44% free lunch rate. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with young people each day and I am always searching for ways to help my students learn. I would like to improve their problem solving skills with featured math problems of the day. I have found a set of overhead transparencies that I feel will greatly help my students. These transparencies are separated into different categories and gradually progress in difficulty. I will use these each day to help my students gain extra practice on valuable math skills. This practice will be a warm up activity and I know it will help my students engage their brains and understand the daily math lesson. I have also found some transparencies and hands on manipulatives to help with geometry. Students must have hands on experience to understand symmetry and geometry. I would like to have a set of two-dimensional shapes that the children will fit inside three dimensional shapes. They will then be able to understand what the 3-D shapes look like when they are unfolded. An overhead set will also allow me to guide them through the process. The last thing I am asking for is a set of geometry mirrors to help my students discover symmetry. These mirrors have rulers on them so the students can place a geometric shape beside the mirror and draw symmetry to scale! I'm sure it would be a great way to learn. These sets would greatly improve my students' understanding this year and the years to come. I am very excited about these resources and would love to implement them in my classroom. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you!
