Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend school in an urban setting in Washington, DC, and I am proud to serve such an avid crew! They are excited during Math and Spanish Language Arts instruction, and they enjoy explaining their mathematical reasoning to each other!

My third grade dual language classroom is a place where my students learn to persevere through challenge.

Students spend the year learning how math works, applying strategies, and using models that help them solve each problem. In addition, they strive to accomplish their end-of-year reading goals in Spanish. They stay the course while completing weekly reading assignments and try their best as they respond to comprehension.

To achieve their reading goals in Spanish, students are grouped according to reading level and complete daily work on building those practices that promote Spanish literacy. Although there is a range of reading levels in the class and the majority of them are way below grade level, I am confident that with hard work and dedication, my kids will accomplish success!

My Project

In the upcoming English Language Arts unit, my third graders will be studying about people and strong voices that overcame obstacles. I want to make sure that in my Spanish Language Arts Guided Reading groups, I am bridging the knowledge my students are acquiring.

The books I have chosen for this project, like Tili y el Muro/ Tillie and the Wall and From North to South / Del Norte al Sur, focus on stories of immigrants and also people who have embraced diversity and been a voice for it.

My greatest desire with the books I am requesting here is that when students read from them, they are able to relate from their life experiences or even make connections that will continue to encourage them to be overcomers!
