Help me give my students grooming materials such as toothpaste, soap, deodorant, socks, shirts and sweaters so they have professional attire for interviews and career readiness as we prepare for our launch event "Something Hot for the Cold."
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
One of my favorite African proverbs says "The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth." Some of the students stay in broken or single parent households. Some of them live in other facilities for assistance such as the local shelter and some are exposed to gang activity which is a major problem. Some have to travel in dangerous areas to and from school. They want to be embraced, loved and appreciated.
My students live in a poverty stricken neighborhood where its hard to maintain a stable life because of various challenges that can hinder their academic productivity and future success.
In spite of their situation and circumstances, they are dedicated to their studies and seek every opportunity to be active whether it's in sports, academic and mentoring programs. They are committed in helping others and want to be more involved in the community where they live. As African and Hispanic students, they strive for unity, yet want support as well, to help them maintain a life full of joy and stability even while faced with different challenges.
My Project
Many of our students are faced with homeless and financial situations. Some of our males struggle and are made fun of because they dont have nice apparel to wear. They desire to dress professionally but can't afford certain clothing. It's our mission to help them overcome these various limitations of not having certain clothing items to increase their self esteem and to provide a positive sense of self and a different prospective on life. These items were hand picked so that students can have access to materials that they otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.
Not only are we helping them personally, but we are teaching them how to give and have empathy towards others who are in need.
With our launch event, we are feeding the less fortunate this season with hot food that requires paper goods and providing them with toiletries. These students have never been so ready for change and they have embraced those who are willing to help them overcome their struggles.
