This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I say it loud and proud . . . MY STUDENTS ARE FROM DETROIT! They are intelligent, hard working and excited to learn new things and their families have a strong commitment to making sure their children get a quality education. In addition, Detroit Public School Community District is going through a renaissance and has made a renewed commitment to our students and the communities they call home. How exciting that you could be part of these positive changes by supporting my class!
My Project
Children can make connections and learn from characters in a story, especially when they have something in common with those characters. Each of these stories highlight a child in a dangerous or remote area of the world, that overcomes a unique challenge that threatens their education. One character has to wait patiently for a camel to deliver their books. Another young lady has to earn her education in hiding because the adults in her community don't believe girls should be in school. My students also have unique challenges due to their environments that they need to overcome. I will use these stories to inspire my students to keep trying, keep pushing forward, keep achieving! We will read them out loud and make connections to how the characters persevere and discuss how they too can persevere. We will create and laminate book marks to remind them of strategies they can use to overcome challenges when they arise.
