Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Last year we had two different students from our school suffer family members being shot. Fortunately, both victims are recovering. But this is the sad case in our neighborhood. Bullying is our number one problem. If we don't address it, the problem will escalate into violence.
Our school is typical of most public schools.
We are located next to the Bronx jail where there is a daily line of inmates coming in and out. On the other side of the street is the criminal court where there is a daily line of criminal cases. The South Bronx is known more for poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, and failing schools than academic opportunities. Bullying is a substantial problem in our classrooms, school, community, city and nation. Bullying starts seemingly small and innocent - a little bit of teasing. But it can escalate dangerously to constant teasing, harassment, ridicule, abuse and that can also graduate to violence. In order to combat bullying we have to address the root causes and we have to address it at its earliest point - in our schools. While there is incredible and overwhelming obsession to teach the "core subjects" - we often forget that character education is THE CORE, the most essential, the most fundamental subject to learn in our classrooms.
My Project
We propose a book club that uses books in both print (Bullying in Schools) and e-books with the Nooks. Students will therefore have access to a wide variety of readings on the subject of bullying. Students will write about the book, write about their bullying experiences, causes of bullying, and propose solutions. Students will be typing their essays, researching their essays, collaborating online through Google Docs, peer editing essays, grading and judging essays, and finally publishing on their Nooks. So rather than boring homework assignments, we hope to empower and energize our student body through an essay contest that is all online. But we need tablets and books in order to accomplish this. We believe that through the power of technology and online collaborative learning we can help reduce bullying at our school by empowering the voices of our students and publishing their voices.
Our school is located in the South Bronx which is also one of the most violent neighborhoods in New York City.
Which is why it is critical to stop bullying early for students because while it may starts as insults, jokes and seemingly insignificant or typical behavior of children - it not only has significant effects but also its effects can evolve into physical violence and homicide. So please help us invest in a writing campaign against bullying to show our students that the pen is mightier!
