This year, I will have one sophomore class and three senior classes. I teach on a trimester schedule and actually be able to work with approximately 150 students! The diversity of the races, experiences, and cultures in our school creates an opportunity for us to learn so much from each other. We have an English as a Second Language program which attracts students from many different countries, wonderful racial diversity, and students who bring a wealth of unique experiences to the classroom.
We are a Title 1 School and the vast majority of our students qualify for free or reduced lunches.
Because of the economic hardships, many of the students have not had opportunities outside of the classroom or resources at home to enhance their academic experiences.
My Project
Because this English class has a sports theme, I have chosen a variety of materials which cover a multitude of sports and will appeal to both the males and females in the class. The selected books offer information that is often appealing to students who struggle to become engaged with traditional texts, while providing them with a wealth of information. I have also selected books which are not available in our class library to increase the selections in our school as well as in my classroom.
Students will use the books to complete research projects on sports topics of their choice.
Some students may choose to research a specific career, while others may research a specific person or culture. Students in the class will conduct multiple research projects throughout the course as well as have access to the books for independent reading projects.
The availability of the books will allow students to enhance research, identify current topics, study careers, and analyze the way in which sports reflect the world in which we live.
