Because this English class has a sports theme, I have chosen a variety of magazines which cover a multitude of sports and will appeal to both the males and females in the class. Magazines offer articles and information that is often appealing to students who struggle to become engaged with traditional texts, while providing them with a wealth of information. In order to use the magazines effectively throughout our course, one of our first activities will challenge students to "deconstruct" a magazine to thoroughly analyze the elements of the magazine. This will include exploring the purpose of placing articles and advertisements in certain locations, developing a profile of the target audience (age/gender/region/etc.), evaluating the effectiveness of article titles, and identifying the names and roles of the various contributors to the magazine. The availability of the magazines will allow students to use them to enhance research, identify current topics, study careers, and analyze the way in which sports reflect the world in which we live.
