Overcome Stage Fright with Puppetry

My students need socks, googly eyes, felt, fabric foam, yarn, gasket material, and other creative tools to build puppet representations of the characters we are studying in language arts.

My Students

According to Handspring Puppet Company, "An actor struggles to die onstage, but a puppet has to struggle to live. And in a way that's a metaphor for life." My students are energetic and outgoing, but collectively struggle when asked to present in front of the class, especially in groups.

My students are 7th and 8th grade students, ages 12 to 14.

We possess a diverse population of various abilities and cultures. These students are brave and bold behind the safety of their desk. However, public speaking is a challenging requirement that these students must fulfill as a part of the California Common Core State Standards. The majority of my students do not read for fun, but find it to be a taxing chore. By infusing the visual and performing arts into our Language Arts classes, I believe that my students will be able to discover joy when reading and presenting.

My Project

Our goal with the socks, googly eyes, felt, fabric foam, yarn, gasket material, and other creative materials is to bring the literature we are reading in class to life while creatively challenging the students. Our seventh graders will be reading Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." Each student will exercise their imagination by constructing their own sock puppet representation of a specific character from the play. Olivia may wear black felt sunglasses to "veil" herself, while Sir Toby might be covered in pom poms to represent his large personality. Students will collaborate within small ensembles to develop a sock puppet scene presentation. The eighth grade students will be reading the dramatized adaptation of "War Horse." In groups of three, students will work as an ensemble building a cohesive performance while manipulating a puppet made from brown paper and masking tape. Fundamental techniques highlighting breathing, concentration/focus, and confidence through rehearsal repetition will be our target.

Donations to this project will generate creative, team building opportunities for my students.

The feared task of presenting before the group will be less of a burden as the task of presenting is shared. Moreover, student presenters will be focused on their puppets, therefore diverting fearful self consciousness. With the support of Disneyland CREATE and others we hope to provide an enriched visual and performing arts experience for our students in Language Arts.
