Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in NY. I teach in a special program geared to help children that are on the Autism Spectrum; specifically Asperger's Syndrome. Our class consists of two teachers, one special educator and one general educator. We have a maximum of twelve children in our class, four of which have Asperger's and eight neurotypical children. We take a flexible approach to inclusion and integrated provision of therapeutic services to help children with Asperger's learn how to interact with typically developing peers while meeting high academic standards.
My classroom was a Kindergarten classroom that was changed to a first grade classroom. However, we have a majority of Kindergarten books. My students are growing readers and these books that we have are far to easy for them.
This project will really benefit my students because they will be provided with books that challenge them. It is imperative that students can effectively choose appropriate texts so that they will be less likely to abandon books they choose and more likely to spend more time in engaged reading.
Your help will ensure that my students read independently and build fluency. My students will be able to build comprehension and overall reading achievement.
