Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are promised a new play area in the school that is 100 years old. Budgets are tight and supplies are limited. Recess is on the bottom of the list. However, the list makers do not understand that learning takes place in many forms and recess time promotes learning.

My students are from an urban district where outside play after school is not the norm and considered a treat when taken to the park.

Student:" We are 5 years old and expected to stay in our seats all day long from 8:15- 3:00 pm. We are expected to learn (a lot) but are on a schedule when to learn, when to eat and even when to use the bathroom. We want to learn. We want to play. We want to learn and play." Teacher: "This is just too much for my students. I have been fortunate to incorporate "learning tool time" (not toys..wink wink) into my day, spend hours planning and implementing engaging hands on lessons, tap into their creativity and some days paint just to paint but this is not enough."

My Project

Outside play supports inside learning on many levels. It enables the students to apply many of their new inside knowledge to other experiences such as counting the ball bounces, jumping rope 100 times or even racing around cones. It enables my active students to focus inside. It will be fun and at 5 years old learning should be fun! I am in need of jump ropes, hoops, cones, balls, hopscotch carpet,bowling set, and ring toss.

The promised playground may happen or may not.

What is guaranteed is that my students will only be 5 years old this one time. They need outside learning just as much as inside learning. These materials enable me to promote outside learning in a safe and engaging way. Teacher:"Students lets go outside and count by 5's using our jump ropes, balls, and other "learning tools" (wink wink)." Students:" Yippee for we can hear the birds chirping and the soft wind whispering in our ears. :)"
