My Students

Students in the "Highest Poverty" category, often do not have opportunities to follow their dreams. I am all about making the impossible possible and their dreams for the future an obtainable reality. My students come from countries around the world. They have traveled from Africa, Asia, South America, and across North America, as children of refugees and families that move frequently, due to low-income earning ability. The unique and difficult experiences of my students are what make my students some of the most powerful and determined young minds you could ever hope to meet.

My students have experienced adversity.

In our classroom, we rise above it. My students are resilient and brilliant. They have incredible leadership abilities. They help each other and understand the power of teamwork. We build a classroom community and care for each other. When one student succeeds, they all celebrate the success achieved by their classmate. These bonds are forged with time, shared tribulation, and the universal truth that every single student in our class has enormous potential.

My Project

Volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, surface water, erosion, landslides.... these are some of the topics covered in our 4th grade curriculum on Earth Science. This project is all about changes in the earth's surface. How, why, what does it look like? Students will design and engineer their own prints using the Speedball Printmaster Press and art-print carving blocks. They will use print making techniques to illustrate their understanding of slow and fast changes on the earth's surface. These multi-dimensional artistic examples will provide a hands-on opportunity for students to delve deeper into science through art.

By using the hands-on print-making art technology from this project, every student in our class will have an opportunity to use the Speedball Printmaster Press, printmaking blocks, tools, and artist grade ink and watercolors to design and create their own multi-layered expression of how the fast and slow processes in Earth Science take place.

Students will put their engineering brains to work as they design a multiple layer piece of printmaking art that shows how land form changes takes place.

Students will use mathematics to create a scale replica of the earth's layers from the core of the earth to the crust using printmaking techniques. Students will use the functions area and perimeter as they design artistic representations of our earths layers.

We will even incorporate language arts by discussing "The Etcher's Studio". It is a beautiful book about apprenticing for an etcher. The second literary offering included in this project is " Johann Gutenberg and the Printing Press (Inventions and Discovery)" - a book offering illumination to students about one of the most life changing inventions - the printing press!

How arts tie it all together - Science can be beautiful. Let's show the kids how and let their imaginations soar with the STEAM!
