My Students

Our large group of 9th through 12th graders are experiencing mental health problems at a much higher rate than in previous years. In a recent Washington Post article, a study found that "adolescents in high-achieving schools can suffer significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and delinquent behaviors, at least two to three times the national average." Covid-19 has also negatively impacted our students as they struggle to cope with learning and socializing in a school setting again.

Our students need a place to go during the school day to calm down and catch their breath so they can learn to manage stress and self-regulate their emotions.

My Project

The Zen Den was born out of the school's newly implemented mental health program, Sources of Strength. Students and staff recognize that students need a safe space to go to during the school day if they start to feel overwhelmed or anxious.

To create a comfortable and calming space for students, the Zen Den will need soft lighting, stress balls, plants, and comfortable seating.

All of these proven stress-relieving items will help create a relaxing space for students when they need a place to go to self-regulate their emotions and catch their breath. Students can visit the Zen Den, located in the Student Services office, for 20 to 25 minutes and, if they need additional help, they can talk to their counselor.
