This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The quality of conversation with children in between the ages of 0 and 3 is correlated to the child's language skills, IQ, and verbal comprehension at 9-14 years old. Opportunities for interactive talk could have lasting benefits for children. During these early years, experiences shape a child’s development. In particular, the way that adult caregivers respond to a child shapes the child’s brain architecture.
By teaching caregivers about the importance of interactive talk and equipping them with tools, strategies, and opportunities to increase conversations, we aim to have a positive impact on the existing achievement gaps.
We support children develop their first language of Spanish with hopes that families experience the exponential benefits on their social emotional and academic development.
My Project
Programa Familiar de Lenguaje serves Spanish speaking families with children between the ages of 0 and 5 who have not yet started school. Through songs, books, games, and movement, parents support their child's language development, while adding tools to their parenting toolbox to use at home. Our goal is to empower parents to take on the role of their child's first teacher in order to establish a strong foundation of support and language development, increasing their chances of reaching their potential as students and adults.
Parents are eager for engaging opportunities to gather safely with their young children.
To honor this need, we are offering fall classes outdoors, in addition to virtual classes. These outdoor classes will include the same components of our indoor and virtual classes, with an added component of obstacle courses. These items will add a shaded area, an new element of fun, and opportunities for engagement.
