My Project

I remember having walkie talkies when I was little, and it was a very cool “toy”. Using them in school today will be great outdoor learning activity that will help the pre-K students to develop skills in language and literacy. The great thing about walkie talkies is that they are designed to be used as a communication device. Speaking and listening skills are a critical part of common Core English Language Arts instruction. They are also an important objective for our English Language Learners.

Walkie Talkies will allow students to use a technology medium at recess while developing communication skills by giving them practice with critical Speaking and Listening Language Arts Standards through outdoor play.

The possibilities for outdoor scavenger hunts are endless, but putting students in teams with walkie talkies adds language and literacy development to the hunt. A simple idea for a walkie talkie scavenger hunt is an alphabet nature game. Students will search for a list of A-Z items in nature that I give each team. Teams are split using their walkie talkies to try and hide their findings from others, so they can be the first team to find all the artifacts from A-Z. This hunt can be adjusted to find objects in nature in quantities of 1-10. For example students can talk to each other as they scour the playground for 4 leaves, 5 twigs, 6 rocks and so on, until they have collections of objects containing 1-10 numbers of objects. Teams can use their walkie talkies to help each other reach their goal as they develop numeracy and counting practice as well as language and communication.
