Our students and staff plan to use these walkie talkies during our weekly outdoor learning experiences and quarterly overnight camping trips in which students explore and accomplish learning goals and tasks in multi-age groups called field teams.
With these walkie-talkies, each field team will have a walkie-talkie and be able to communicate directly with advisors as they are independently exploring our environment.
Exploring outside through real-world, community and environmentally-focused projects and experiences is an essential part of learning at Northern Waters. One week, we might be canoeing down the Namekagon River to collect water samples and the next week we might be hiking along the North Country Trail to map out historical settlements on the landscape.
Not only will these walkie-talkies help students to gain ownership and responsibility of their learning, but they will also add an additional layer of safety (through increased communication) during our field experiences.
