My Students

I teach at a smaller school that has a largely free and reduced-price lunch population. We seek to prepare each and every student for college, even if they do not intend to go. At least we know that if they change their mind at any point in their life, they are set. Our school is open to anyone in our state, so we have students from all backgrounds, from rural settings where they drive over an hour each way to urban settings. Our school is downtown and thus, we get many students that live closer to the building.

My Project

Every spring, my school has symposium courses. These are all-day-long classes that last for 6 days. One course that I offer is "Historic Battles," where we go outside and learn about ancient and middle age battles and the strategies that were used. The students make their own shields and we use other gym items to help us make it a bit more realistic for the reenactment. The course also plays a lot of Capture the Flag as we are out on a beautiful field for most of the day. They use their knowledge of military strategy to then see if they can apply it to Capture the Flag. The items with this project help with making shields, team t-shirts, and more!
