Outdoor Classroom Seating in Pre-K

My Students

My school is located in Harlem, New York City. My students walk into school each day full of life and excited to learn! With many of my students coming from low-income/high-poverty homes, the staff at our school makes every effort to develop our student's social-emotional and academic needs. Our school focuses on "Bee Behaviors" which teach our students to "be kind," "be ready," "be helpful," "be safe," and "be present." Our energetic Pre-K Class has 40% of children with special needs and 60% general education students. As a teacher in a Title l school, I am constantly looking for ways to engage and challenge my students in a meaningful way.

My Project

As COVID-19 has forced many to stay home, our school has adjusted to host school outside when possible. This project will provide outdoor classroom seating in Pre-K. Students can play, draw a picture, or read outdoors.

There is no such thing as poor weather, only poor clothing.

We feel young students can learn outside amongst nature. Students enjoy collecting rocks, pinecones, leaves, digging in the garden, or hearing the birds. Outdoor classrooms provide the opportunity to host this curiosity and explore the natural world. Please help give my students a place to sit and work outdoors.
