Outdoor Classroom: Farm-to-Table Experience

I need picnic tables so our students can experience our outdoor classroom, and so we can support the farm-to-table Initiative which is focused on students with an interest in agriculture.

My Students

I began teaching 11 years ago in a very wealthy area. I loved my students and families but felt that I was being called to work with students that were less fortunate. I started teaching at Little Mill Middle School, a Title 1 Reward School, 3 years ago to help develop a curriculum unlike any other. I teach a 5th Academic Class called Enrichment, where students have the opportunity to engage in project based lessons, that foster collaboration, critical thinking, communication and problem solving skills.

The North Cluster of Forsyth County is seeking to reach students that come from an agriculture background with a farm-to-table initiative.

We hope to create an outdoor classroom that teachers of all subject areas can take their students outside to experience our vegetable gardens and one day chicken coops! The students in our Enrichment Classes across all grade levels are helping to plan the gardens, create designs for chicken coops, and design landscaping for a butterfly garden.

My Project

As we build our outdoor classroom, our Enrichment Department will be focused on building a curriculum to support the farm-to-table initiative. I do not have a background in agriculture and will be learning through this process.

Our students are excited to add to work on a project based on the agriculture lifestyle and learn new skills that will directly effect their lives.

I am excited to be a part of this process and continue to build relationships with students by connecting with their home life. The outdoor classroom will provide opportunities for our students and teachers at Little Mill Middle School!
