This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Knock, knock. Who's there? A new kindergarten class! Except, when they walk in...they see an old, stained, and pulled apart rug. How inviting is that?
Knock, knock. Who's there? A NEW RUG! Fresh smell, bright colors, and entirely inviting. Now the students can't wait to come to school!
Our students are 25 bright eyed and bushy tailed Kindergarten students.
It is mandatory for all students that are 5 years old to come to school each and every day! So, we have had to open up 8 Kindergarten classes at our school. Wow, are we full!
Our school is located in a high needs area. We are in an urban location with many families that are coming to the country for the first time. That being said, we have a LARGE population of English Language Learners. Our school staff has been working overtime to put together family-centered events and programs for families to be introduced to the school and country. We are trying our best to teach the students AND their families.
My Project
We are in dire need of a new classroom rug. Our current rug is over 12 years old and has been in this same Kindergarten classroom. Yup you guessed it, many many years of bathroom and "tummy-ache" accidents. Our custodians have been wonderful, and have vacuumed our rug each and every day. It has also been diligently cleaned by me, yet, the stains and wear and tear stayed.
Each and every day our students read, write, compute, and play on this rug. The foundations set in Kindergarten are all created on this rug. We are on the rug for over 80% of the school day, this rug is not just big, it's HUGE for the development of our students' school experiences.
What will we do with a new rug? The same as what we've done so far. Except, a new rug will create a better environment for the students to learn in. And what more could we ask for than that?
A new classroom rug would change the way the students perceive school.
It will create more of an incentive to be a part of the classroom and learn. Most of our learning is done on a rug and in a whole-group setting, so with a new rug, MOST of our learning will be more successful and pleasing. Bright colors, fully bound edges, and a pleasant smell will increase the positive behavior in the classroom, and keep the students wanting to learn on the rug for longer, and maybe - FOREVER! :)
