My Students

"Please let us read something in English we can understand that doesn't involve cute little animals!" Imagine being a teenager beginning a new life in a new country, trying to learn a new language and fit it, and the only reading material you can find that you understand involves baby ducks!

My students are typical American teenagers - they are often moody, elated, frightened, anxious, and hopeful all at the same time.

However, there is one thing different about them; they have been moved from the only home they have known to begin a new life in a new country. They are from Bangladesh, Yemen, The Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Columbia, China, India, and Cameroon. Some have never learned to read, some have. Like all teenagers, they are embarrassed with having to read "baby books." Often, this is the only material available for them to read in English that they understand. Imagine you are in a new school, trying to fit in with your peers, and you're caught reading Green Eggs and Ham. Now, there's no denying the brilliance of Dr. Seuss - for six year olds; but not for 13 year olds!

My Project

This Scholastic magazine series is specifically targeted for students like mine. It contains articles and pictures which appeal to teenagers, but is written at a lower reading level. The magazine also targets specific skill sets such as grammar and new vocabulary in an engaging way. This is perfect for my students. I'm an English as a Second Language teacher in a low income middle school in Queens. Like many school districts, we are feeling the effects of years of budget cuts. Your kind help will allow my students to receive age appropriate reading material that is engaging and interactive.

As a teacher, I know that the middle school years are "the make or break years." People say that this is the hardest age- I say that this is the most exciting.

However, I also know that these are the years where we "lose" students. Most students who eventually drop out decide to do so by the time they're in 8th grade. With your help, we might just be able to convince one or two to stay in school. Thank you.
