My Students
"Happiness lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort." Franklin D. Roosevelt
My students are ready to overcome any obstacle and read rich material about how others are able to face any challenge that comes their way.
All of my students receive Special Education services while in my classroom. Several of my students are also English Language Learners. In my school, over 86% of students are classified as low income and 22% receive Special Education services.
My Project
My 7th and 8th grade special education students are eager to dig deeper and learn more about a topic. We will be reading "Out of Dust" (and listening to it on the audio tape, too!) to learn more about the Great Depression. We will then spend the rest of our quarter-long unit researching the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Through rich texts, both fiction and non-fiction, my students will be prepared to write their coordinating research paper. With varied difficulty levels of the texts, my students will be able to find books at their reading level to help them discover more about the topic.
These books are essential to providing my students with rich texts to help them develop and sustain a topic throughout a quarter long unit.
They will learn about how other people overcame hardship and inspire them to do the same.
