My students need 2 sets of Lakeshore Sight-Word Readers, a Search & Find Sight-Words Language Board, 2 Book Display Stands and 2 boxes of dry erase markers.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Reading is the key to success in school. I teach in a high poverty, Title I school. Most of my students do not have a shelf full of books in their homes. Some students have none at all.
These children have very limited numbers of books at home. No one reads to many of them. There are no opportunities to flip through a favorite book. This particular class has 13 children who were retained in Kindergarten last year. We placed all the retained children into one class with a smaller number of students hoping to bridge the gap and prepare them fully for first grade.
I am requesting Sight Word Books and the Display Stands to present the books in an inviting way. I want to provide every opportunity for them to learn to love books. We have provided a great library in the classroom of books to be read to the students. The books I am requesting today are books that the children will be able to read without adult help. When students read sight words in context it improves their fluency.
I am grateful for the opportunity to request needed supplies for my classroom. This is my second year teaching and I do not yet have the resources that some veteran teachers have. Your support of this project will help make better readers. Better readers are more prepared to succeed in school. That will be a great thing! Thank you.
