My Students
I am a second-year teacher working with about 70 8th graders. We are from a rural area, and the majority of my students come from low-income families. As with most teenagers, my students struggle to enjoy reading. I am always looking for ways to encourage them to be better readers.
I am in need of a classroom set of the novel Out of My Mind for my students to use in a literary circle activity.
This novel is a wonderful way for students to get inside the mind of someone living with a disability.
My Project
I am always looking for engaging assignments to tide my students over after standardized testing is complete. I want to engage them in a way that shows that the purpose of a class is not to just pass a state test and that the learning should continue after they are over. Literary circles are the perfect way to get students excited about reading and they are huge in helping students the value of working in groups.
The most important way I can ensure a literary circle is successful is to make sure I have novels to offer my students that will actually engage them and help them enjoy the assignment.
Out of My Mind is a beautiful novel about a young girl with a disability called cerebral palsy. The novel demonstrates through Melody our protagonist, that though one might appear to be "disabled" on the exterior, we should never assume him or her to be incapable. And that disabled does not ever mean incapable.
