Reading is an escape. There is nothing better than taking a break from the reality that you cannot control and diving into a book that has a world of its own. There is a book for every situation life throws at you, where you can learn from the experiences each character overcomes. Somehow you can identify with a character in such a way that you suddenly don't feel so alone in life, even if the character is fictional. There is no better feeling than turning that final page, closing your eyes, and breathing a sigh of relief. I want my students to know this feeling. Books fill up your heart and mind unlike anything else. I want my students to appreciate books and their unique lessons. I primarily teach students that read well below 8th grade level. Their low levels are a combination of poor reading comprehension skills, poor vocabulary skills, and an overall lack of interest in reading due to years of it being deemed "uncool." Because they lack the basic reading comprehension skills needed to understand the story, reading isn't as enjoyable as it should be. I am in need of graphic novels for my classroom. I am a first-year teacher and lack a lot of the resources that my experienced coworkers have in their classrooms. The books I do have are great for my more mature readers, but the addition of graphic novels would help me reach ALL of my students. Graphic novels help with comprehension and give students the confidence to complete an interesting book that could be daunting in chapter-book form. They make reading more enjoyable and open the door for that student who has a history of hating to read, and makes him want to read again and again.
