This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a middle school on the northwest side of Chicago. The students here are 93.5% Hispanic, and 95% are considered low income. We also serve a population that is 27% limited English proficiency.

Kids are kids wherever you go, and my students are too despite facing some challenging situations.

These kids are typical middle schoolers--they are energetic, lethargic, advanced, and struggling. My classroom has a wide spectrum of levels and experiences, but the students are always interesting.

My Project

Readers want to see themselves and their interests mirrored in what they read. Right now, our classroom library mirrors the teacher and not the students. It's getting older and in need of a refresh.

I want to put the books students are asking me for in their hands.

I'm often asked for more graphic novels, more "life problem" books, y más libros en español. Without more relevant choices for my students, more of them are making the choice not to read at all. One of my goals is to create lifelong readers, and I know that will never happen if I don't instill a love of reading now. The best way to do that is to match the right student to the right book. The more books we have in our classroom, the more likely I'll be able to do that.
