This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students love stories about justice and tolerance. They gravitate toward characters they can personally relate to, and this historical fiction novel has both to offer.
The characters in Out of Darkness are smart, brave, and beautiful, just like my students.
They also face many inequities in life and though they fight to work against them, the inequities prove to be too overwhelming.
Although the story is sad, it also provides hope. This book has been challenged by school boards in Texas and Tennessee, but students need to read the novel to see if those challenges have any merit.
