Out of Africa: Empowering Students Through Art

My students need 68 terrific books about African animals, folktales, customs and geography; 6 African instruments; and 11 music CDs; a CD player and headphones; and a DVD.

My Students

Through exploration of the humanities, my students will learn how to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask questions. Coupling the humanities with music, dance and art will help them to gain new insights into everything. Art empowers students.

My older, urban, diverse school neighborhood is becoming a pocket of poverty and we have a problem with name calling and teasing in the classroom and bullying on the playground.

Our stable neighborhood is changing. Well over 1/2 of my students qualify for free and reduced rate breakfast and lunch. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. One out of every 9 students is in a bilingual or ELL program. We have students who have recently arrived from Somalia, China, Nepal, Pakistan, as well as Natives from rural areas. We are located near two military bases and have a significant number of students who are children of deployed military personnel. Although they are great kids, many of my students suffer from low self-esteem. They are emotionally bruised and battered by bullies who denigrate their culture and heritage. Students need to respect other cultures. They need to study and celebrate Africa but need resources our school can not afford.

My Project

The humanities can be described as the study of how people process and document human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used literature, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world. Africa is one of the largest continents and home to hundreds of ethnic people, exotic animals and different ecosystems. It is rich in art and design. African art has influenced modern artists including Picasso and Matisse. I am requesting 68 books on animals, folktales; 6 musical instruments; 11 music CDs; a CD player and headphones. My 3rd and 4th graders will study the art heritage of Africa while learning about the ancient sites, geographical wonders, animals and history. They will listen to music, create their own and make talking drums. They will study and make Adinkra fabric and Mali Mud cloth. They will make Masai adornments and Yorba necklaces. They will study animals and make Dogon animal masks. This ambitious project will empower students through art.

This project will empower students through art to learn about African cultures, history and customs.

They will learn to think critically about the visual arts and visual culture. Students will learn about the music and material culture of the second largest continent. Students will create music and art based upon the different African cultures. My students need the support of donors because they need resources like books, music instruments, and CDs that our school cannot afford.
