Current research has demonstrated the importance of providing a rich learning environment for preschoolers, especially preschoolers with special needs. An environment that promotes opportunities for student learning via active engagement in early mathematical skills and concepts helps to lay the foundations for later mathematical reasoning. In my class of eight preschoolers (between the ages of three to five) with special needs at P811M, The Mickey Mantle School, I encourage the students to explore mathematics through fun learning activities. Some of the academic goals that are addressed through the math activities include developing a concept of basic geometric shapes, colors, and numbers, counting, one to one correspondence, the concept of time, patterns, and weight and measurement. Materials purchased through Lakeshore Learning Inc. will be used directly with the students to help develop these mathematical concepts in fun way. The materials include puzzles that help to reinforce the concept of numbers and numerical order, a book of file folder math games, patterning and counting matching cards, color and classification game, as well as a classroom balance scale and student write on/wipe off clocks.
